Tonight was the annual Poinsettia Bowl here in San Diego. That is a recently invented bowl game, but it is followed by the notorious Holiday Bowl just after Christmas. It has been a tradition for me to shoot these two games for the past several yeras. It was fun while it lasted, but I no longer have the desire to shoot sports. Here a few a few shots from the Holiday Bowl last year.
As a non-sports photographer, the best part of the Holiday bowl is when they roll out the giant American flag for the national anthem. It’s huge! that flag fills the field from end zone to end zone. It’s a blast to run underneath, and photograph the backlit flag along with the marines who are keeping it from touching the ground. The key is being quick. At the last note of the national anthem, there is a flyover of jets from Miramar. Moments afterward, the marines charge inward from all corners, bundling up the flag as they advance toward the middle of the field. You definitely don’t want to get caught up in that.
The game last year made for some good shots as well. But honestly, it’s all about that giant flag.
